    • Château des Ducs de Normandie - in Bonneville-sur-Touques (near Deauville)
      Overlooking the mouth of the river Touques, the important remains of a fortress of the Dukes of Normandy, offer the main features of a XIth century castle. William the Conqueror was fond of that residence where Harold's oath was sworn and where the duke presented Duchess Mathilda to the barons to invest her with the regency of the duchy before sailing for Pevensey and Hastings. The fortress was taken over 5 times alternatively by the Franch and The English between 1203 and 1449. The Germans garrissoned here 600 workers building the defenses on the beaches in 1943 and 1944.
